What is GRE?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test that measures a student's verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills. It is widely accepted by graduate schools, business schools, and law schools in the United States and other countries for admission purposes.

The GRE consists of three main sections:

• Verbal Reasoning: This section measures the candidate's ability to understand and analyze written material, and to evaluate arguments and identify assumptions. It consists of 40 questions to be completed in 60 minutes.
• Quantitative Reasoning: This section measures the candidate's ability to solve mathematical problems, including arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. It consists of 40 questions to be completed in 70 minutes.
• Analytical Writing: This section measures the candidate's ability to write clear and well-organized analytical essays in response to two writing prompts. The two essays are to be completed in 60 minutes each.

The GRE is a computer-based test and is offered year-round at authorized testing centres. The GRE General Test fee is $205, although discounts are sometimes available to eligible candidates. The test results are valid for five years.

It is important to note that while the GRE is an important part of the graduate school admission process, it is just one factor that graduate schools consider. Other factors include transcripts, letters of recommendation, essays, and interviews.

Here are the steps to take to prepare for and take the GRE:

• Determine if the GRE is required: Before starting the preparation process, make sure that the graduate schools you are interested in require the GRE as part of their admission requirements.

• Create a study plan: Decide when you want to take the test and create a study plan accordingly. Set aside enough time for studying, taking practice tests, and reviewing your results.

• Familiarize yourself with the test format: Review the GRE test format and content to get a better understanding of what to expect on test day. Make use of the Official GRE Guide and other official study materials.

• Study and practice: Use a combination of study materials, such as textbooks, practice tests, and online resources, to prepare for the GRE. Practice both verbal and quantitative reasoning questions and make note of the areas you need to improve.

• Take practice tests: Take full-length practice tests under test-like conditions to help you build your endurance and improve your test-taking skills. Review the answers and explanations to identify your strengths and weaknesses.

• Register for the test: Register for the GRE General Test on the ETS website, or by phone. You can select your preferred test date and test centre.

• Prepare for test day: Make sure you are well-rested, have a healthy breakfast, and arrive at the test centre at least 30 minutes before your appointment. Bring two forms of identification, and allow enough time for unexpected delays.

• Take the test: On test day, be focused, stay calm, and pace yourself throughout the test. Follow the instructions carefully and use your time wisely.

• Receive your scores: Your GRE scores will be available online approximately 10-15 days after.
