PPT - Managing Sections

Because of PowerPoint's ubiquity and versatility, there are times when you're working on very large slide decks or just collaborating with other people to create the presentations. It's often good to be able to divide the slides into smaller groups and work with them in these situations. To do this, PowerPoint 2010 adds the concept of sections. The following are the main functions that sections can perform.

Creating Sections

The following are the processes for creating a new section. These procedures can be carried out in either the Normal or Slide Sorter views.

Step 1: In the Normal or Slide Sorter views, right-click the section you wish to add and select Add Section.

Step 2: The new segment is added to the presentation, and all following slides are placed within it.

Step 3: The new section is named "Untitled Section" by default, but you can alter it. Select "Rename Section" from the context menu when you right-click on the section.

Step 4: In the Rename Section dialogue box, type the new name for the section. All characters are accepted, including alphabets, digits, special characters, punctuations, and so on.

Step 5: On the popup, click the "Rename" button to rename the section.

Rearranging Sections

One of the benefits of using sections is that you can group slides together and rearrange them as a single set. You can move the entire area instead of moving each slide individually. You may drag and move the pieces just like you can with slides. You can also right-click the part and drag it up or down, as illustrated below.

If you have a lot of slides to deal with, you can collapse them to see only the bits you need. This also makes rearranging them easier.

Deleting Sections

There are three ways to erase sections in PowerPoint 2010. The function of each option is mentioned below.

  1. Remove Section – This is used to delete the selected section and merges slides with the previous section.
  2. Remove Section & Slide – This option deletes the selected section and all the slides in that section.
  3. Remove All Sections – This option deletes all the sections and merges all the slides into a presentation without sections.
